The Virgin Mary is in a landscape with the infant Saint John and the Christ child. A broken classical column, representing the old pagan times, stands behind them with Saint Joseph holding a light, whilst a fantastical city looms in the distance.

This jewel of a painting was bought by William Bankes (1786–1855) in Spain in 1813. He bought it as a Raphael but, although it is close to an early Raphael in character, it has since been attributed to Raphael's circle, his late Roman pupils.

On the back of the panel are the brands of two of its previous owners, Vincenzo Gonzaga I (1562–1612), 4th Duke of Mantua, and Charles I, who bought the bulk of the Gonzaga collections in 1626–1628. Acquired for Philip IV of Spain during the Commonwealth, the painting was looted by the French from the sacristy of the Escorial in the Peninsular War (1808–1814).
