There are a number of copies of this portrait of the three eldest children of Charles I and of van Dyck's later painting of five of the king's children. Their popularity may be accounted for by their charm; the fact that the subjects are children may also have played a part in why collectors well-disposed towards the Stuarts chose them over van Dyck's other portraits of the Royal Family. There are more copies of this painting than of the portrait of the five children, both because it is the more successful composition, and because it shows the three most important children of the five.
