Casilda, the daughter of an Arab king, converted to Christianity. Surprised by her father while taking food to his Christian prisoners, a miracle occurred in which the food hidden in the folds of her dress was transformed into roses. She is said to have lived to the age of 100. The miracle gives rise to the traditional iconography associated with her of roses in a basket or within a heavily folded dress. These attributes are also associated with Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, who was known for her charitable acts, leading to some confusion. Saint Casilda is generally portrayed wearing a diadem and with more youthful features, whereas Saint Elizabeth is appropriately crowned, in sumptuous dress, with more mature features. This is an example from the sets of female saints produced by Zurbarán and his studio in Seville in the early 1630s.
