This unusual painting apparently hung for many years in 'The Covenanters Arms', an Aberdeen public house, before being acquired by a private owner, then donated to this collection. It shows James Graham, then 5th Earl of Montrose, as General of the Covenant (1636–1639). He was not created 1st Marquis of Montrose by Charles I until he had changed sides and was leading the Royalist cause fighting against the Covenant (1644–1645). Montrose and his troops caused damage in Clackmannanshire, especially in Dollar, when they passed through on their way to the Battle of Kilsyth (1645), though they were apparently entertained in Alloa Tower by the Earl of Mar. Nothing is known about the artist.
