A middle-aged woman is shown on a wooden seat beside the corner of a whitewashed building in one of the Falkirk closes. In the far distance the spire of the Steeple can be seen towering above slated and tiled buildings. The woman is wearing a red head scarf tied in a knot at the neck and covering her ears and head. Draped over her shoulders is a brown shawl with tassel ends. She has a dark blue loosely fitting dress with white cuffs. Around her waist is a broad band of brown cloth and her hands rest on her lap upon this. To one side of the woman is a tall wooden box supporting a chamfered wooden tray containing apples, which are evidently for sale. Next to the box is an open barrel, also containing apples packed in green foliage. The barrel has two hoops near the top, which appear to be split hazel or willow rather than iron.
