This is one of Bough’s best-known paintings. It shows Edenside cricket ground to the north of the city and was possibly painted for Mr Howe, one of the umpires, who is shown in the painting. This is an important historical record of a cricket match, as it shows the players' outfits which included a top hat. Chimneys, factory buildings and ships' masts on Carlisle Canal can be seen on the skyline. An account in the Carlisle Journal dated 8th June 1844 refers to a match similar to the one in the painting between the Carlisle and Northumberland clubs: 'A great number of spectators excited a good deal of interest. Tents were erected on the ground and a large party dined together in one of them…the excellent brass band of the 43rd Regiment was on the ground and added much to the gaiety of the day.
