Philanthropist; daughter of Sir Francis Burdett and heiress of the fortune of her grandfather, whose name, Coutts, she took; close friend of many leading writers, actors, politicians and scientists; exceptional in the number and range of her charitable activities: the poor, women, animals and education were her particular concerns; raised to the peerage by Queen Victoria, 1871.
