Abbé Peter Grant, a well-known antiquary in Rome, brought the portrait to Scotland in the early eighteenth century. It may have been a gift from the exiled Stuart court and it eventually came to Blairs Museum. In 2010, the portrait was the recipient of a prestigious conservation award from Woodmansterne. The portrait was cleaned, repaired and re-lined and also benefited from a new and more flattering frame.
