'Calm Water' demonstrates Bet Low's preoccupation with paring down the elements of landscape to simple shapes and tones. While representing a vivid image of the moon reflecting in a dead calm sea, the slate gray and blue of the work presents a beguiling mood enhancing the impact of the work.

Bet Low's paintings of the 1970s and 1980s developed the theme of Scotland's landscape represented in idealised form. Taking inspiration from the Northern and Western Isles, as well as the Highlands, Low's work of this time presents a romantic idyll of Scotland's wild places.
