The largest painting at City Hall depicts the announcement in Belfast on the 24 January 1901 that Edward VII is the new King following the death of Queen Victoria. Lord Mayor Sir Daniel Dixon reads the proclamation joined by councillors of the time and officials such as Sir Samuel Black, the Town Clerk – today we call this position Chief Executive. The backdrop of the painting is Belfast Town Hall, Victoria Street (owned today by the Court Service) as City Hall was still under construction. The painting, however, contains interesting peculiarities. The colours of the robes worn by the Lord Mayor and the High Sheriff, for example, are not correct and although only two Sergeant at Mace existed – a mysterious third can be seen. The artist Ernest Taylor died of pneumonia before he could finish and so his friend, artist William Gibbes Mackenzie completed the commission.
