Artist and businessman Thomas Everard Spence was born in Portadown and educated at a Quaker school in York. Largely self-taught, he was a gifted landscape and portrait painter and exhibited for many years at the UAA and the RUA.

Robert Mitchell Henry, brother of the artist Paul Henry, obtained first class degrees at the Royal University of Ireland and London University. Politically Henry was an ardent nationalist and was deeply interested in Irish history, founding the Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies in 1936. This painting is a copy after the original painting by Paul Henry, executed from a photograph of the original after it had been destroyed by fire in the Great Hall in 1981.
