The dashing Captain Dighton Probyn was awarded the Victoria Cross after the Indian Mutiny (1857–1859) for 'gallantry and daring throughout this campaign', which included his action during the Battle of Agra, 10 October 1857.

While in command of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, Probyn charged ahead of his squadron in response to a surprise attack by rebel forces, and single-handedly took on a party of the enemy. Although surrounded, Probyn succeeded in killing three rebel sepoys (Indian private soldiers) in a single attack and captured their flag. He went on to receive a number of honours and awards, becoming a general in 1888 and a Privy Counsellor in 1901. Probyn died in 1924 at the age of 91.
