4th Earl and 1st Duke of Perth, James Drummond succeeded to the title in 1675. He was a supporter of the Royalists and a persecutor of the Covenanters which resulted in his becoming a figure of fear and hate throughout Scotland. When James II came to the throne in 1685 the Earl adopted the Roman Catholic faith with the result that he became closely associated with the King and his chief adviser on Scottish affairs. Sir Robert Sibbald was physician to James Drummond and it was due to his influence that Sir Robert obtained an interview with the Duke of York, brother of Charles II. As is well known, the Duke of York was successful in obtaining the support of the King for the establishment of the College of Physicians in Edinburgh which led to the granting of the Charter to which the Great Seal was attached on 29th November 1681.
