Hermann Boerhaave (1668–1738) was a man of great learning and became known for his knowledge of science and medicine. His clinical teaching attracted students from all over Europe and his published works became the standard medical textbooks of the time. Boerhaave’s legacy lies with the methods of teaching he introduced and in the many famous scientists and physicians who studied under him. He was apparently a man of striking personality, characterised by warmth, geniality and simplicity.

The artist is unknown but the painting was probably derived from an engraving by Jan Wandelaar.
