Francis William Lockwood was appointed Headmaster of William Ellis School in 1945 at the age of 36. During the war he had been headteacher at Gainsborough Grammar School. He was a graduate of St Catherine's College, Cambridge, and had previously taught Classics at Wilson's Grammar School in London. Dynamic and of a strong mind about the direction the post-war school should take, his first priority was the re-unification of the school in its current Highgate Road site after the fragmentation caused by the Second World War. He re-established and oversaw the development and rapid progress of the sixth form. The energy of the school in both new and more traditional activities reflected his own enthusiasm for excellence in teaching and learning. In 1953 he moved to be headteacher at Plymouth College and died of a heart attack in 1955.
