Kitchen scene with woman sitting beside a fireplace to the right, peeling a carrot over a plate on her lap. She sits facing the fire dressed in a yellow blouse and red bodice with a dark skirt, her hair secured off her face. Bundles of carrots are on the ground at her feet, beside a large pot and bucket. A cauldron is suspended over the fire to the far right, with a high mantelpiece above, on which three plates are displayed. A child lies asleep in a large wicker cradle to the left of woman, a boy and young girl stand behind the cradle to the right, the boy eats a carrot in his left hand. On the left is a chair, on which are piled blankets and cushions. Behind the group is a square doorway framed with dark curtains, one of which is pulled back and draped over a warming pan.
