Thomas Thynne was Member of Parliament for Oxford University and later Tamworth. He was created Viscount Weymouth in 1682.

Though this portrait demonstrates Lely’s successful adoption of the elegant style of Van Dyck, it has a formulaic quality absent from the Flemish master’s work. Thomas Thynne’s pose recurs in several other works by Lely. Indeed, to keep up with demand, Lely had his studio assistants prepare paintings with stock poses to which he simply added his sitter’s features.
