During the mid-1940s, when 'Susannah and the Elders' was painted, Ayrton was preoccupied with religious subject matter and nature. His poetic, mystical and organic paintings from this period drew inspiration from the English Romantic tradition and artists such as Samuel Palmer and Gothic painters such as Mathias Grünewald. He has depicted the three protagonists of the well-known story as the trees themselves, with the two more sinister-looking trees in the background representing the spying elders.
