This rustic scene is typical of Corot's later works. His light brushwork captures the effect of light on the trees' foliage and the delicacy of the meadow grasses. Close to the horizon a stroke of white paint suggests a distant stretch of water reflecting the sky. The landscape is animated by a peasant with a red shawl who walks toward two cattle, one black and the other light brown with a white head. The colours used to depict them lift the tonal range from the muted greens of their setting and create a focus within the composition.
