‘The Parrot Cage’ was painted while Jacqueline Stanley was at Beckenham College of Art, when she was aged 19. It was part of her entry for the Royal College of Art. The artist worked from drawings in sketch books, and said, ‘I remember feeding the parrot crisps, and then I saw the idea for the painting.’ She started at the Royal College aged 20. That following winter, in 1950, ‘The Parrot Cage’ was entered into the second Young Contemporaries exhibition along with five of her other works. The Young Contemporaries was an exhibition started by Carel Weight with student Ivor Fox in 1949. Jacqueline Stanley instigated the first Young Contemporaries Dance at the RCA in 1950, which followed this exhibition. The other 5 paintings believed to have been exhibited in the Young Contemporaries Exhibition 1950 were a series painted in Hastings, East Sussex of the fishermen’s net huts, boats and church.
