This painting shows Fergusson's friend and fellow artist, Bertha Case. This work was painted when both artists were in Paris. It is painted in a very vivid and colourful way, showing clear influences of the current art trends in Paris at that time. His brushstrokes are loose and dynamic, symbolising her energetic and ephemeral presence. This feeling is further enhanced by the pink parasol over her shoulder which seems to dissolve into the strong blocks of colour in the background. Fergusson uses green hues to represent the shadows on her face, but repeats the colour elsewhere in the composition to give the picture a unified effect – a device he learnt by studying the art of Matisse and the Fauves.
