Escosura was born at Oviedo in Northern Spain. He studied at the Academy in Madrid and under J. L. Gérôme in Paris, where he spent much of his life painting historical and costume pictures. He visited New York several times to paint portraits and local subjects. In America he associated with Samuel P. Avery, an influential art dealer and founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
