Lawyer, critic and editor of Shakespeare. A cosmopolitan man, who travelled between Dublin, Paris and London, Malone did not settle permanently in England until 1777. He rapidly gained admission to the best literary and political circles of the day. He was frequently in attendance at Samuel Johnson's Literary Club and became a close friend of Boswell and Reynolds. He was heavily involved in editing Boswell's Life of Johnson, he was also a leading critic who was responsible for the chronological arrangement of the Shakespearean canon. His opinions and publications as a Shakespearean critic ensured him fame and notoriety in an era which reclaimed the Bard as the patriotic emblem of the nation. X-ray analysis of the lower half of the portrait suggests that Malone was originally depicted holding a book.
