Jiménez Aranda was born in Seville, where he was a pupil and subsequently professor at the Academy of Fine Arts there. He exhibited mainly genre scenes, receiving medals at exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Vienna, Munich, Berlin and Chicago. As well as exhibiting widely, he also spent time living and working in Rome and later Paris. The holy oil referred to in the title was blessed in the cathedral once a year on Maundy Thursday then distributed amongst priests to anoint the sick.
