Robinson became a taberdar of Queen's in 1572 and a Fellow in 1575. He was elected Principal of St Edmund Hall in 1576 and Provost of Queen's in 1581. He became Bishop of Carlisle in 1598. As Provost, and known as ‘a second founder’, he incorporated the College by an Act of Parliament in 1585 under the name ‘The Queen’s College in Oxford’ and brought about much restoration and improvement in the College.
