This painting dates from around 1868. Unusually for Daumier, it was worked up from a full-scale oil sketch. It is both fluent and highly finished. Such bucolic scenes of people wining and dining in the open air became a popular theme with the Impressionists. This work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in Paris in 1917.
