Nathan Cooper Branwhite was the leading miniature portrait painter in Bristol from about 1810. He also made small portraits in oil and worked in monochrome wash. His portraits were praised for their lifelike accuracy and it is from his work that we know what so many Bristol artists looked like. Three of Branwhite's children and a grandson were also to practise as artists in Bristol. John Eagles, the subject of this painting, was a curate at St Nicholas' church in Bristol from 1812 to 1822 and was also a keen amateur artist. He was a close friend of the Bristol artists and was the first to describe them as 'The Bristol School'. Here he is shown painting a landscape in oils, but few of his oil paintings survive today as he made disastrous experiments with his materials.
