A highly dramatic painting of a rescue at sea. On the left is a ship which has been wrecked on the treacherous Goodwin Sands. She is keeling right over and has lost her masts. Figures can still be seen on the deck waving their arms as they desperately await rescue. In the high seas a paddle steamer in the centre of the painting is heading for the wreck. She is towing a lifeboat, presumably because it was too rough for the crew to row. Part of one of the broken masts from the wreck can be seen floating in the water in the foreground on the left. The sky is glowing which enhances the dramatic effect of the painting.

It is signed ‘R H Nibbs’.
