Bargue studied under Jean-Léon Gérome and worked in Paris as a genre painter and lithographer. This work is one of a series of oil and pencil sketches related to a highly finished cabinet painting of 1878. Its subject reflects the widespread fashion for the French eighteenth century during the Second Empire and the Third Republic. Margaret Davies purchased this painting in 1910.
