Alfred Sisley was born in Paris of English parents and lived in France all his life. He struggled throughout his life to sell his work, unlike some of the other Impressionist painters who eventually achieved success. The precise date of this vibrant landscape is uncertain. The very loose brushwork is typical of his work in the 1880s when he was living in villages to the south-east of Paris, not far from the forest of Fontainebleau.
