Printmaker and painter, born in Altrincham, Cheshire. She studied at Manchester College of Art; Byam Shaw School, 1925–8, with Ernest Jackson; Euston Road School, 1937–9, with William Coldstream; and the Central School, 1957–60, under Merlyn Evans and Tony Harrison. Travelled extensively, including South Africa, 1930–2, and then to France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark and Sweden. In Paris in 1934 Cubism was an influence. During World War II Melland was actively involved with Civil Defence Artists’ Group. She exhibited regularly with RE and WIAC; joined Roter Treiter Group of Printmakers in Munich in 1961; in 1970 joining Free Painters and Sculptors. She showed solo with Wertheim and Jackson Galleries, Manchester; Zwemmer Gallery; and in Italy and Switzerland.
