Painter, illustrator, writer and collector, born in London, where he continued to live, and in Witley, Surrey. He studied art with Albert Moore and attended Eton College and South Kensington. Went on to assemble a large collection of William Blake’s work, as well as important pieces by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Moore. He was author and illustrator of A Masque of May Morning, Old English Songs and Dances and other works. Plays included Pinkie and the Fairies and Alexander the Great, and The Fountain of Youth was a comic opera. Was a member of RBA, RP and ROI, showing extensively at Carfax Gallery, NEAC, Goupil Gallery, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and elsewhere. His memoirs Time Was, which went through many impressions after first appearing in 1931, are packed with such characters as Oscar Wilde, Ellen Terry, James McNeill Whistler and Sarah Bernhardt.
