(b Delft, 1 May 1567; d Delft, 27 June 1641). Dutch portrait painter, active mainly in Delft and in The Hague. He was court painter to the House of Orange, highly successful, and very prolific: Sandrart reports that Mierevelt himself estimated that he made about 10,000 portraits. Even though this figure must be a considerable exaggeration, his portraits certainly tend to be dull and formulaic; however, they are meticulously crafted and of great value as historical records.
