The costume and attributes of lute, sword, manuscripts and antique torsos indicate that the sitter is a mid-sixteenth century courtier. The large cedro, or citrus fruit, may be a rebus for the sitter, perhaps indicating a member of the Cedrini family. The clarity of design and style, recalling the work of Pontormo, suggests that the picture was painted in Tuscany. It has also been compared to the works of the Bolognese artist, the Master of the Jacquemart-André Lutanist.
