Even the earliest science fiction, by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells for example, is not well represented in paintings, and especially not in public collections. If Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein can be considered science fiction, it seems not have inspired many painters of the period, despite its important place in the literature of the Romantic movement. Oil painting is not usually the preferred medium of illustrators of science fiction and science fantasy subjects, however the work of Chris Foss can be seen on Art UK.
