Martin Hopkinson,

There is a badge on the fireman's helmet. If it is not a generic one it might be possible to identify the town or city for which he worked

Martin Hopkinson,

Has any checked the catalogues of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy and the annual exhibitions in Aberdeen and Edinburgh for c. 1878-79 to see if there was an artist with the initials JLM or perhaps FLM exhibiting?

ANDREW GRAHAM,

THE WORLDS FIRST MUNICIPLE FIRE SERVICE WAS SET UP BY JAMES BRAIDWOOD IN EDINBURGH IN 1824 , IT WAS LATER TO SET UP THE LONDON FIRE BRIGADE.I THINK THIS UNIFORM IS NOT MUCH LATER, I WOULD SAY 1830/s- 1840.s.

It is now three weeks since any comments were posted on this discussion. No conclusion has been reached but there have been further lines of enquiry suggested. It may be appropriate to now draw this to a conclusion.

Lou Taylor, Dress and Textiles,

I have been on to this and trying to contact a Fire Brigade Union Museum in Scotland but have not heard back. Rebecca Quinton, Dress Curator Glasgow museums has also been looking. I think it is c 1870-80 . Please do not shut this down yet.

I also wanted to contact the dress curator at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich about the mid 18th century Naval Officer portrait. They would know there at once what this was.
