Completed North West England: Artists and Subjects 9 Could this work be by David Payne and of Haddon Hall?

Looking up from the river the bulk of the building should be seen to the right of the tower, not to the left, as shown in the painting. Also the tower is much higher than the other building mass. But as a painter, I know how frequently massing is shifted for artistic effect and composition. Difficult to say.

Is Augustus Oakley Deacon a possibility? The attached cutting is from an article in the Derby Mercury dated 24 Sep 1890. There is also a painting titled "Gardens of Haddon Hall" by Deacon.

I'm fairly convinced that the work is by David Payne - the size is identical with this one of Windsor:

Haddon Hall's a good shout but I'm not absolutely sold on the location.

Actually, I've changed my mind on the basis of this engraving:

All the towers/turrets seem to be in the right places.

I've sent a link of this conversation over to Haddon Hall for their consideration.

Response from Vikki Stronge of Hadden Hall:
"The painting is most definitely of Haddon Hall, painted from the River Wye, facing towards the South East elevation, with the Eagle/Peveril Tower to the back right, with the North West Tower to the left of the painting. I think the artist has used a bit of 'creative licence' with the chimneys, adding much larger sets of group chimneys than we actually have."

If we are agreed that the artist is David Payne, I'll refer this back to the PCF as a concluded discussion. Thanks to Martin for spotting the painting in the first instance and for all contributions.

In summary:
The painting style, subject matter and canvas size indicates that it is most likely to be the work of David Payne but, without a signature or supporting provenance, the case has not yet wholly been made for a firm attribution. However, the scene has been clearly identified as Haddon Hall.
