There is a monogram and date top-right. Who could have painted this portrait?
The collection note:
'The monogram is 'THD' or 'HTD' depending upon how you read it. The date is 1913. The sitter was working as a chaplain to the British Legation in Vienna in 1913. He died there in 1924. We do not know the identity of the artist.'

The Austrian artist Tom von Dreger (1868-1948) exhibited a portrait of Arthur P. Hill in Vienna in 1913. His monogram looks like this: http://bit.ly/2dYBE5Y
Is this the same monogram? I think so, but could the collection please take a look? Maybe there is also a reference to the exhibition on the back (it was exhibited as no. 41)
I attach a contemporary newspaper article about the exhibition.
Well done Andrea, the monogram appears to be the same and the exhibition reference conclusive.
Absolutely - nice work, Andrea. Even at this resolution it's clearly the same monogram (see enhanced image attached).
The collection have been contacted about this recommendation.
