How to look after oil paintings in your care

The survey of collection managers carried out by Art UK in summer 2013 revealed that 60% of respondents would welcome additional information resources on Art Detective, and 37% would like Art Detective to help them by providing advice about conservation issues.

This information is intended primarily for non-professional curators and collection managers and those given responsibility for paintings in non-museum institutions, who would like some basic, practical advice on how to care for paintings.

Professional curators and those with more experience are advised to go directly to the information pages put together by the Institute of Conservation (ICON) (http://www.conservationregister.com).

Although this information is primarily concerned with oil paintings, many of the principles apply equally to other media. See http://www.conservationregister.com for more information.
