George Macmillan (1855–1936) belonged to the second generation of the Macmillan publishing dynasty. One of his first tasks upon joining the family firm was to assist George Grove in the preparation of the first edition of Grove's 'Dictionary of Music and Musicians', which was published in 1879. Macmillan developed a close relationship with Grove and it was in the year of Grove's death, 1900, that he was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Music. He subsequently became Honorary Secretary of the College in 1919 and in 1931 financed the production of the 'Catalogue of Manuscripts' held in the College's collections.
