Designer, sculptor and teacher, born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, who studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art, 1971–3, moved to London and studied at the Architectural Association, 1974–9. In 1981, with Caroline Thorman, he founded Ron Arad Associates, an architecture and design practice in Chalk Farm, then in 1994 established the Ron Arad Studio, a design and production unit in Como, Italy. Arad increasingly produced pieces of sheet steel, stating that he “always mischievously exploits their formal and functional possibilities to the fullest. The sculptural forms often have an unexpected impact which first emerges during use, and are just as much a result of graphic design as the experimental work that goes on in the workshop.” Arad was a guest professor at the Hochschule in Vienna, Austria, 1994–7, later becoming professor of industrial and furniture design at the Royal College of Art, and was guest editor of the 1994 International Design Yearbook.
