Painter who was brought up in south London in a tough environment, was a motor mechanic for a decade and did not go to Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts until 1971. After four years there he was at Royal College of Art, 1975–8, in 1977 winning the Lubiam Award in Mantova, Italy. Baker’s work reflected his experience of city life transformed on canvas into slowly formed but telling images. Baker had a key solo show at Warwick Arts Trust in 1983, also exhibiting at Paton Gallery. He was included in Exhibition Road in 1988 at Royal College, which holds his work, as does Arts Council.
