Writer and painter in oil, born at Bearsted, Kent. Balston was educated at Eton College and Oxford University. During the 1930s he studied painting for a short period with Mark Gertler and he exhibited extensively at Redfern Gallery. He was a discriminating collector whose own pictures are held by Manchester City Art Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Balston was a connoisseur who contributed to the specialist periodicals Image and Signature and who wrote several books on wood engraving, including a study of Robert Gibbings. Savile and Garrick Club member who lived in London.
