Painter and teacher, born in Wales. He studied at Slade School of Fine Art, 1960–4, gaining the first-year drawing prize, 1960 and David Sylvester Prize, 1964; obtained his London University teacher’s certificate, 1965; then became a lecturer in foundation studies at the faculty of art and design at Liverpool Polytechnic, becoming head of department, 1989. Took part in a number of group shows, including John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, Ibis Gallery, WAC and Royal National Eisteddfod, in Wales. In 1999 Ogilvy & Estill, Conway, held a Baum solo exhibition in which the relationship of figures to their environment was examined. In 2002, Bruton Street Gallery gave Baum his first major London showing for nearly 20 years. Both the Arts Council and WAC hold his work.
