Painter, notable for his portraits which while achieving a likeness tended to reveal personality as well. Benney was born and worked in London, but also spent many years in New York. Collaborated with poets and writers. Mixed exhibitions included Slick at Arts Club and Romanticism at New Math Gallery, both New York, 1984; Centre of Contemporary Art in Seattle, 1985; Artisan Space, New York, 1988; and Lamont Gallery, Art92, 1992. Had a series of solo shows at PPOW in New York from 1984, with Nigel Greenwood Gallery, 1992 and Long & Ryle from 1994. In 1994–5 his The Supreme Court, Jerusalem, was shown at National Portrait Gallery prior to display at the Supreme Court Building. It had been commissioned to commemorate its official opening.
