Sculptor and teacher. Attended Eastbourne School of Art, 1965–7, North-East London Polytechnic, 1967–70, and Slade School of Fine Art, 1970–2. Had extensive teaching experience from 1973, including Workers’ Educational Association, Brighton Polytechnic, West Sussex College of Art and Wimbledon School of Art. Took part in extensive group exhibitions, including Brighton Polytechnic Gallery, 1979; as artist-in-residence, Varndean College, Brighton, 1982; Sussex Artists, Brighton Festival, 1991; and Sculpture at Canterbury, 1992. From 1984 Black was in collaboration with the sculptor Anthony Caro. His solo shows included Southover Grange Gardens, Lewes, 1982, and Charleston Farmhouse, Firle, 1989. Black did a substantial amount of public work, including Maygrove Peace Park, Camden Council, 1985; a winning entry for Great Hurricane Sculpture Competition, American Express, Brighton Festival and South East Arts, 1989; and Tree House, Brighton Festival, 1990.
