Versatile artist and teacher, born in Leith, Midlothian, whose career was Scotland-oriented after studying sculpture at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, 1968–72. Bonnar held residencies at Glenrothes New Town, 1973, and at East Kilbride and Stonehaven New Town, 1974–7. After painting scenery for Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, he joined the Blackness Public Arts Project, Dundee, 1981–4, taught part-time in the environmental art department of Glasgow School of Art, 1985–92, winning a Scottish Arts Council Award in 1994. Bonnar’s sculpture could be tinged with humour, witness his four fibreglass figures, titled The Community, commissioned in 1979 by Reidvale Housing Association for Whitevale Street, Dennistoun.
