Painter in oil, teacher and writer, born in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. He was married to the artist Jane Tresidder. Sam Carter gained his master’s degree in the modern languages tripos at Cambridge, 1930–2. He also attended Grenoble and Innsbruck Universities, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts part-time, his teachers including John Cooper, John Farleigh, Fred Porter and Bernard Meninsky, as well as the Euston Road School. He was on the staff of Camberwell School of Art, 1945–9, and of the Slade School of Fine Art, 1949–78, becoming professor of perspective at Royal Academy Schools, 1975–83. Contributed to a number of learned journals on perspective, as well as Oxford Companion to Art, 1970. Showed with East London Group, LG, Arts Council Euston Road touring exhibition, 1948–9, and RA Summer Exhibitions.
