Painter and teacher, born in east Africa, who studied at Glasgow School of Art. Teaching posts included two years at Seychelles Polytechnic and later Falkirk College. Although a sense of place was important in Carter’s work, she was not concerned with complete accuracy. “I often interpret the scene with abstract elements allowing the paint to work for me.” Worked widely in Scotland, the effect of the elements and its special quality of light being of key importance. Skye, Lewis, Harris and the Uists, Tiree and Coll were favourite subjects. Held many solo exhibitions in Britain and abroad, later ones including Lloyd Jerome, Glasgow, 1997, and Richmond Hill Gallery and Ainscough Contemporary Art, both 1999.
