Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. After working as a mechanical engineer, 1972–6, and travel to Europe, 1978, Convery attended Edinburgh College of Art, 1979–83, during which he travelled to Turkey, in 1984 gaining his diploma in postgraduate studies. After part-time lecturing at the College, 1984–6, during which time he visited New York, Convery was appointed lecturer in drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, in 1987. His awards included first prize in the Rowney Competition for painting, 1982; Carnegie and John Kinross travelling scholarships in 1983; and a series of RSA awards, including the Latimer in 1984, Scottish Post Office Board, 1992, and Highland Society of London, 1994; and the Shell Expro Award, 1995.
